1963 early roller gas lid restoration

    To all,

My roller door is in good shape with the exception of a crappy emblem. Does anyone know of a vendor that can replace that emblem without breaking the tabs on the underneath of the lid? By the way, Jerry Cribbs doesn't do this repair any longer

I really don't want to spend $200.00 on a cheap reproduction.

    Thanks,

    Jerry

Jerry, There is no way to remove the tabs without breaking them, I found one in Fla. for 10.00 to experiment on. I did break off only two tabs and carefully slid to removed the metal piece and then the old emblem out and installed the a new Emblem and the metal piece back in carefully it takes patience but you can slide the pieces in, then with a small amount of JB Weld on each broken tab at the ends and the undersides of broken tabs, I then put in place and let them set up overnight and then used a touch up brush with a dab of silver on the exposed Epoxy it’s looks like they were never apart. Hope this makes since?

Many years ago I would guy all the 63 roller doors at swap meets that had no broken tabs. Being very careful you can slip out the metal backing plate and replace the emblem with a new one from Trim Parts. I say very careful. At one time I had 10 or so roller doors and one NOS roller door. They are all gone now!

Moral of the story is you don't need to be some kind of expert to repair 63 roller doors. Just start out with unbroken tabs and don't break one along the way.

Gerald, Good luck my friend. My '63 has a repro roller door that does not have a logo on it.. Was made back in the day by Richard Cohen of LI Corvette.
Here used to be a member in the NE that restored them. Someone help me out here. Jerry? John

Jerry Cribbs from NE restored one for me many years ago. Great job.

              John,

Richard owned LI Corvette and Jerry owns Corvette Central. The roller doors were made by Trim Parts!

I have a new emblem and an original door.
I looked long and hard at the nice original door and decided I would likely brake the tabs getting the emblem in.
I wouldn't have guessed it could be done by looking at it.
I was considering cutting the tabs, as close to the back as possible, with a Dremel Saw and epoxying them back on.
Also considered cutting out the original door so I would only fight the replacement and not the removal.
I chickened out and purchased a replacement door.
I am glad others have been able to do it.
I still have a nice original door and emblem, for reasonable, if anyone wants to give it a try!
Please post your results as I am interested. I just look at pot metal tabs and they break off.
                Rick

                    Frank,

Thanks for the lead on The Finishing Touch for the restoration on my gas lid door. He quoted me $500.00 plus the cost of the plastic insert, so I think I'm going with a reproduction door.

Jerry, The early repro roller doors were make by Richard Cohen of LI Corvette. That is what is on my '63. They didn't have a logo on them.
The two regionals my 63 was judged at the judges were looking all over the door for a logo. I just laughed and told them the story.
The repro is gorgeous and quite affordable. John
