1965 VIN tag

There is a number stamped on my VIN tag that appears to have been added after production. I've heard that some dealers stamped these with the date the car was delivered to the customer. The car's production date is 2/1/65. The extra stamping reads 3 12 65. I'd like to know if anyone else is familiar with these additional stampings.

That is correct. Some dealers stamped a date of delivery on the VIN tag.

Hi Roger,

Yes. some dealers stamped the date the car's POP was activated...for example, my car was K28 body build date (June 28, 1967) and the delivery date (DD) was 10 10 67 - as was the signed date in my warranty booklet.
So, it must have sat on the lot for a while.

Mine was wacked rather hard into the Trim Plate (Tag)

that is why GM put the DD on the vin tags.

Hi Roger, As you can see in this heavily modified Trim Plate image (filtered so the depth of the stamp might be more evident) it looks like the guy either used a small sledge - or had "Popeye-the-Sailor-Man" arms . The font stamps almost punch thru to the metal...probably because they are fairly small sized...

Also, you can see the delivery date in my Warranty book matches the delivery date "Whack" in the Trim Plate...my POP also has 10/10/67 in the lower right after the first owner's name and address...fun stuff, eh?
