Just to make sure I understand, because they are dryseal, does that mean pipe dope cannot or should not be used?

It's OK to use sealer on most dryseal threads. However, if the threads are in good shape, it's not necessary. If the threads are worn or damaged, though, then sealer is usually necessary. When necessary I use Permatex pipe thread sealer with Teflon.

There is an exception to the use of sealer, though. Coolant temperature senders ground through the threads and are always dryseal threads. If one applies sealer to these threads it can interfere with the ground. Some folks say this cannot happen. From my own experience I can say, for certain, that it can cause problems. I remember it well and it happened to me a LONG time ago but I'll not forget that lesson.
