    72 LT1 renovation question

On the final stages of our body off 1972 LT1 Convertible renovation. We are attempting to obtain a quality level NCRS restoration.

We believe our rear tailing arms are original to our car (shown on 70-72 NCRS I M & JG page 231 Fig 7.25). The I M & J G shows a painted date (I believe stenciled). Advise of necessity on reproducing this painted feature?

    Stamped, not painted or stenciled.
Think library book loan expiration date, and you get the idea.

The dates on the rear trailing arms were stamped with white ink. It was not uncommon especially the driver side for whatever reason was usually upside down and the passenger side was right side up. Only the first three letters of the month were used along with the number of the day with no comma and four digits for the year. The stamp measures one and three-quarter inch long and 3/8 of an inch in height.

Necessary?? If the Chassis judge looks for them, and can get far enough under the car to see if they are there or not, you might loose a fraction of a point, or a point if the judge is a heavy hitter. Let's see how we get there using the matrix system: Trailing Arms & Strut Rods are 6 points originality & 6 points condition.

Originality Matrix = lets say Strut Rods and Trailing arms are equal weight so each is worth 3 points. So trailing Arms CDCIF = Configuration OK, Date = no, Complete = OK, Installed = OK, Finish = OK. So divide 3 points by 5 = 0.6 so you will lose either half a point or some people, the hammers, round up to one point. In the chrome bumper C3 group the half point equals a dot in the margin. Get enough of those and you lose one point. If the judge is one of those who like to round up you are still at one point loss.

Now we can debate if the lack of a stamped date indicates the item is not an originally installed trailing arm. We can also debate if all trailing arms were stamped with a date. See how much fun this is? And all for one point or less. Now you decide how to proceed.

Here are original stamps. Both are angled. Font size is 5/16". The right side was stamped 8" from the front bolt and the left was 6" away.
They are really nice to see on a survivor, but I don't see the point of adding them on a restored car. I also have the original yellow stamp on my driveshaft. What if the car was parked and that stamp was facing up and the chassis judge was looking for it? I'd say a judge probably has more important things to look at. No points plus or minus for the stamps in my case.

I would never make a deduction if I did not see any dates, but would inform the owner that the norm is for the trailing arms to have them. Like Terry said, if I did see dates I would make a "smiley" face.
