    69 Steering Gear Box

My 69 L36 with power steering has a 5677648 Saginaw gear box. I know this is inconsistent with the AIM. I'm the original owner and know that I've never changed the box, but many years ago I left the car at a shop a long time for various work. I'm not aware that they did anything with steering. I've seen this number is some posts that seem mostly related to C2's. Any chance this one slipped into the assembly line somehow?

I discovered this after finding that a lower coupling I ordered from a vendor wouldn't fit. The coupling had a flat, but the shaft on my box is fully splined. The coupling I removed from the box splined 3/4 around. The vendor's description stated their coupling would fit 69L - 82 models. My car was produced on 9/06/69 according to the original Corvette Order Copy. I've always "assumed" this meant my car qualified as "late." Over the years I've purchased many parts with that assumption when there was a difference in the part description between "early" and "late." Is there a clear delineation between these terms?

    Thanks,
    Mike

1969 Corvettes steering gears used the "full round" worm shaft until very late in the model year. My original owner 1969 built in mid September, 1969 had such a shaft. As far as I know, ALL 1969's (and later) used the 5677648 steering gear housing casting.
