    1964 Grease Pencil engine markings

A NCRS member just purchased a low mileage one owner 64 convertible. The grease pencil marking on the front passenger side head was written "RO" which indicates engine suffix for a 300hp engine. On the front drivers side head was written "NR" which I assume means no radio as this is a radio delete car, Would this be a correct assumption ?

driverssidehead.jpgpassengersidehead.jpgMaybe, my '64's original engine had the marks on the back of the heads, an "RF" on the driver's side (it is a fuelie), and the body sequence number (?) on the passenger side.

What you probably see is "RD", which is the engine code for the L-75 300 HP engine with manual transmission or RQ for L-75 with manual trans. and C-60, air conditioning. The code along with the engine build date is also stamped on the RH block deck ahead of the front face of the cylinder head and should be visible if the block deck has not been machined in the field.

I'm not sure what the NR or whatever is written means. BTW back in the C1/2 era there was no such thing as "radio delete". Since a radio was not part of the base vehicle equipment package a Corvette of that era without a factory installed radio is simply a "no radio" car.

A radio became part of the base equipment package in 1976 and option UL-5, Radio Delete, was added and, if ordered, the buyer got a credit.

        Duke,

I should have said " No Radio " as you are correct there is no radio delete. We have the dealer order form and it specifies "no radio ". The car has no shielding, capacitors, ground straps, antenna, etc. Yes the RD is on the front passenger side with the NR on the front drivers side. I assume the NR was to inform the line worker not to install capacitors, ground straps, antenna, etc. On the back side of the head it has a number 16 which doesn't match the body sequence which is 424. I wondering if maybe the 16 is the sequence number from the engine assembly plant maybe indicating the 16th RD engine built that day ?

          Michael,

This engine has a number 16 on the back side of one of the heads. The 16 does not match up to the body build sequence as that number is 424. Maybe the 16 indicated it was the 16th RD motor made that day at the engine assembly plant ?

Yes, the number on the back of the passenger side head on my '64 FI also does not match the body build sequence number on the body. So must be an engine sequence number of some kind. But, mine did not have anything written on the front of the heads.
