Removing Temp Gauge on a 54

    Hi,
Do you have to leave the Temp Wire on when removing the temp gauge?

    Thanks,
    John

I'm not sure what you mean by "Temp Wire". The gauge on a '54 is a mechanical gauge.

      Hi Jim,
It's the metal "wire" attached to the rear of the gauge. I don't see a way to remove it from the gauge.

      Thanks.

I think you are referring to what I call the capillary tub that is connected to the brass bulb that is screwed into the head. On the older cars I have taken off with this system I have been able to remove the gauge with the tub and bulb intact including my 54. Even if you are going to send it out for a rebuild I like to keep it all together. Exception might be if the bulb has welded itself to the head with rust and corrosion.

You don't want to remove that tube from the gauge. Remove the gauge, the tube, and the bulb (at the engine) as one assembly.

I absolutely agree with Jim, the gauge, tube and bulb are one closed unit. Do not separate.

FYI, the tube is filled with Ether. If you suspect that your gauge is not giving an accurate reading, like if you have a 180 degree thermostat and your gauge shows a lower temperature, you've probably lost some Ether..
