Re: Strange Suffix Engine Code 71 "TTO"?

    1970-72 TIM&JG (6th Edition, Page 107) says August 1970 built 1971s and to about September 2, 1970 (B02) were stamped 71S10XXXX.

I have data that goes to Friday Sept 4. So I would say before Labor Day is 71S10XXX and after Labor Day is C11S10XXX.

Thanks for your info Richard; still being all new to all this who is Al Grenning and do you know how I can reach him? Also, still falling back on my ignorance what does SB mean? Special build? The unlimited wealth of knowledge in this overall forum & willingness to help novices like myself is to me virtually unbelievable and speaks volumes to the inherent "brotherhood" of Corvette Owners. Everyone on here is just AWESOME - and I Thank You all again!

As noted in one of my earlier posts; the door tag shows the build date on this as Sep 08, 1970 (B08). This would seem to contradict Labor Day as the "change date" which still confuses me more.

          Hi Ken
Al Grennings ad is on page 60 of the latest Drive Line, if you ever have a chance to attend one of his seminars DON'T MISS IT. He has an extensive volume of information mostly C2 but the inner working of G.M. can be applied beyond C2.

              Ken,

You’re assuming your engine is original to the car.
Current evidence you have posted doesn’t suggest that.

As mentioned, use lacquer thinner or acetone to remove orange paint from the pad, rephotograph, and post.

Labor Day in 1970 was September 7.

I have seen many 71S10XXXX up to Friday September 4, and the first C11S10XXXX I have seen is Tuesday September 8. I think you are considering the "change date" too rigidly. Could they have ended Friday with C11S10XXX or began Tuesday with 71S10XXXX? Of course they could. There is a chance we will never be able to split that hair so closely. But your stamp being 71S10XXXX built on B08 would cause me to study the rest of your stamp pad quite closely. Add the TTO and we are in the area of Not Typical Factory Production.

My suggestion is to follow the advice of Patrick, Sal and others and gently remove the paint from the pad and post a photograph. The wise people here will then be better able to assess what may have happened there.

                  Terry and Patrick,
Thanks for responses. Yes I will get a pic of the pad as soon as I get the car back. It has been in the shop for paint work and some recently discovered mechanical work that needed tending to. Front brake calipers & hoses to name a few. Really appreciate the info you have provided and I'll post a "clean" pic the pad as soon as I get the car back.

OK I finally got car back and here are some pics as you requested. Note that the intake manifold no 3973469 and engine casting no 3970010 appear to be correct. Can anyone verify? Thanks again for all comments and info. Sorry for pics being posted upside down but I don't know why this is happening.

                      Ken,

FYI - you can turn off "Auto Rotate" on your smart phone camera to have photos appear right side up, not upside down.

Search for "how to" instructions for your brand of phone.
