    Holley 3886101 applications question

Hi- Picked up this carb at an estate sale-Just wondered how many applications it had?
    Numbers are:
    3886101 EI
    List- 3247
    Prim. meter. body-4901
    Sec meter. body-4519
    Main Body-6R2829 B
    DOM-8A2-(2ond wk of Jan. 1968)
    I am thinking-Replacement for an L72 Corvette, or maybe a 68' 425 HP big Chev.-or a 68' COPO Camaro?
    Thanks in advance-E.J.

The only original application I can find for the GM #3886101 carburetor is 1966 Corvette with L-72.

Joe- Thanks for looking- I thought the 3 digit date code would indicate that it came on a car? Is that correct?
      Thanks -E.J.

        I believe "8A2" is 2nd week of November 1968

        Jan-1, Feb-2 ... Sep-9, Oct-0, Nov-A, Dec-B

Dave- Thanks for the clarification on the date code. Does the 3 digit date code indicate original equiptment? I thought I read that somewhere-maybe Allan Colvin's book.
          Thanks-E.J.

With the EXCEPTION of 1967 L88 (3886091), for Corvette: 1964-1966 used Part Number 38XXXXX and 1967 thru 1972 used 39XXXXX.

Date Code on all these years was 3 digits - Year / Month / Week (all single digits).

In 1973, Holley Date Codes became 4 digits - a 3 digit Julian Date coupled with a single digit for year.

Thus, at a glance, a 4 digit date code identifies a carburetor manufactured in 1973 or later - outside range of possible Corvette original usage.

I believe 4 barrel Holley 4150 first showed up on 1957 Ford T-Bird, with 4160 on 1958 Fords. Given a 3 digit Date Code, with single digit year, this gives a (at a glance) range of about a two decades (1957-1972) e.g. Date Code "9" being 1959 or 1969.

So yes, a 3 digit Date Code, at a glance, tells you a Holley could have come on a Corvette. While a 4 digit Date Code indicates a manufacture date later than OEM use on Corvette.

            Three digit codes with years of "3","4", "5", and "6", being "1963", "1964", "1965", or "1966". Three digit codes with years of "7", "8", "9", "0", "1", "2" being e.g. "1959" OR "1969", "1962" OR "1972" , etc ...

A 3886101 carburetor manufactured during the 2nd week of November, 1968 could not possibly have been originally installed on a car. Since this carb was only used for 1966, they were not building 1966 Corvettes in November, 1968. So, it had to be a SERVICE carburetor of the original part number. These were available until October, 1982.

                Re: Holley 3886101 applications question

Joe-Thanks for your reply-I did not intend to imply that this carb came on a Corvette-Obviously GM did not build 1966 L72 425 HP 427 Corvettes in 1968!! But!!-GM did build 425 HP 427 Biscaynes,Belaires, and Impalas, and maybe some COPO cars in 1968!
And then, the 3 digit date code would indicate that this carb was OEM on something?
Would a SERVICE carburetor have a 3 digit date code?
I was just trying to determine what this carb came on-see my original post!

As I mentioned in my original response, the GM #3886101 carburetor had only one application and that was 1966 Corvette with L-72. That carburetor was not used for any other applications. So, it could not have been used for any other models, either 1966 or later, equipped with an L-72 engine.

The three character date code was used for all 1972 and earlier Holley carbs, whether they were PRODUCTION or SERVICE.

Joe -Exactly what I needed to know (three character date code for Production OR Service)
So this carb is a Service replacement for an L72 Corvette.
Thanks again for sharing all the info. that you do.
