Re: Door Lock Knob Backing Plate
Frank,
As Don stated it is called a bearing spacer but it functions as a hard plastic spacer between the knob/handle and the door panel vinyl to prevent wear and tear on the door panel. I can’t see mine with the knobs and handles installed but they are there... I put them there.

Re: Door Lock Knob Backing Plate
I have a package of NOS GM part #3863687 plate door lock knob spacers. The color is clear, is that what color the originals were?- Top

Re: Door Lock Knob Backing Plate
Michael------
These are, indeed, the inside door lock knob plate. They go between the knob and the door panel. These were used from 1965 through 1977. The originals on my 1969 were white but, obviously, clear was also used. These pieces are virtually invisible when installed. Of course, the very edge can be seen. I doubt that any colors other than white or clear were used and to what year models the colors apply I know not. These plates were 1-5/16" OD.
The window crank handle used a different but similarly configured plate except that plate was 2" OD.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Door Lock Knob Backing Plate
Joe,
The reason why I asked the color of originals is because I remember a light gray color. The light gray color might have been used for the window or vent crank handles.- Top

Just to clarify...doesn't the lock knob bearing go between the door panel and the inner door skin? I know the bearing goes between the window handles and the door panel.Leif

Leif------
On my 1969 the plate installs between the lock knob and the door handle bezel which is part of the door panel. As far as I know, on 65-67 it installs between the knob and the outer door panel skin.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Door Lock Knob Backing Plate
Joe and Tom,
I had an old timers moment. You're both absolutely correct about the lock knob. I was thinking about the door open mechanism shield that goes behind the door panel. Tom, I believe the door lock has a clear bearing and the window cranks are gray in color.Leif
