The funny thing is the idler seems to be aligned perfectly with the belt. Do you know of any way to measure where the pulley should be, as I've read on some forums it shouldn't be pressed all the way and i think mine is?

That would explain the problem you're seeing and worthwhile checking. If you define a measurement for the pulley's position, I'm happy to provide that for my pump. Maybe from the back of the pulley to a plane on the front of the housing? Post a photo to be clear what's being measured.

      Thanks Joe,
The one I have on the bench looks very similar to the add, particularly the round stamp point inside the cradle. I'll check both cradles whenI pull it apart again to work the best one into the correct shape and fit to the pump body.

        Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to tidy this post up with some good news. I finally got the belt aligned and here what I found was causing the pump to tilt inward toward the engine:

        1. Looking more closely at the bracket that was on the car and the other (original to car when I purchased - not fitted) I noticed the side that bolted up against the block had a manufacturing bulge (purchase as a reproduction part) in the metal and the gap for the pump housing at the mounting was much wider.

        2. I measured the pump distance from stud to bolt and bent the Original bracket to as close as I could. I was still left with a washer thickness gap so I place that washer on the pump side of the stud mount (between the bracket and the pump reservoir), which fitted perfectly.

        3. Once i got the front lower mount bolt in place (for anyone's reference a REAL PITA with just one person with hoses still connected) I tightened everything up and it stayed straight. I also noticed the adjustment was much easier with all the gaps reduced.

The only things left to do is fit the idler pulley and Alternator and check the gaps and alignment. Here's hoping it all goes together correctly and all the belts align. It looks good on test fit of alternator but if there is one thing I've learnt working on this car is nothing is done until all the bolts are tight.

Cheers and thanks again for everyone's valuable input, its very much appreciated and I hope that this update helps someone in the future.
