    1967 L79 Casting Number

Looking at a L79 67 Convertible. The casting date is 3892657, thought it should be 3782870?
    Thanks.

    James,

The casting dates for 62-65 was 3782870. In 66 GM went to the 3892657 block.

This is according to the NCRS 53-72 Specifications Guide.

The nice thing about those '67 ...657 blocks is that they were processed by GM for both small and large main bearings. It started with machining bearing retaining tab notches for both bearing sizes. Then it was align bored for either bearing size So it's real easy to align bore a ...657 block that was originally machined for small bearings to large bearing size and install a 3.75" stroke crank, high strength rods and suitable compression height pistons, and it's not that expensive for parts that are okay for 6000 revs.

Finish the engine off with a L-46 cam installed at the OE 114 deg. ATC inlet POML indexing and you have big block power in absolutely stock L-79 clothing.

The other block that could be easily machined for both bearing sizes as above had a part number ending in ...512 and was service only.
