Joe - Could you share where you sourced the information that one shift lever faces in and one faces out? Ive searched my AIM's and the drawings I found on several years all have the two shift levers installed the same direction.

        Thank you

Partly from my own experience and partly from the fact that the GM part number for the levers is the same for 1-2 and 3-4. This is true for the 63-67 levers, 1968 levers, and 69-74 levers. In addition, if both levers were oriented the same there would be no way that the 3-4 shift rod could get by the 1-2 shift lever.

Joe - This is a 68 transmission I mounted to an engine stand so I could use it for tech seminars and to show how to adjust the shift rods and shifter alignment. It is stamped with vin #18S413465. Looking at the alignment of the 1-2 & 3-4 rods, in this configuration, they are nearly perfectly parallel from shifter to shift levers with both of the levers on the case slanted in toward the case as shown in the 1968 AIM. I could turn the 3-4 lever to lean outward, but that would change the rod spacing from front to back.

I appreciate your discussion on this as I would like to start changing how I am installing these if I am doing it incorrectly for my schools and tech sessions.

I was absolutely incorrect regarding my statement that the lever orientation was reversed for 1-2 and 3-4. I do not know what I was thinking of when I said that. I have deleted my most recent post. The orientation shown in the AIM and in your photos is the correct orientation.

My apologies for the confusion; I'm ashamed of myself.

                Joe,
Ive been reading your posts for the last 18 months and your information is always informative, factual and correct and most importantly, you provide obscure information that most of us have no way of discovering.
Even a computer makes a mistake occasionally so don’t beat yourself up too much. With over 40,000 informative post I doubt anyone else can come close to matching what you do. Keep it coming!

                  Tom,
I agree completely with what you have said. Joe is an invaluable contributor to this TDB without whom a lot of question would go unanswered...or, at the best, answered but without nearly the detail. Keep up the great contributions Joe (32 years and counting). BTW, Joe, let me know when you can walk on water and then we'll discuss perfection

Joe - Thank you for the conversation and please dont take it as you being incorrect. Its all part of a mutual learning process and why I enjoy being a part of the NCRS family. We all share knowledge to help each other become smarter! I only pressed the issue as I did not want to be promoting incorrect information when I present for tech and judging schools and to my 1968 Corvette Owners group on facebook.

Thanks for sharing Joe Lucia, I learn so much from what you share with this group every day!

Here’s an end to a great thread. Found my levers in an unlabeled box. All is good. Here’s a picture of 68 levers. 8E913E3B-127C-4D20-8686-A3C9F2846486.jpg
