Attaching Fan and Pulley to Alternator

A friend removed the fan and pulley from my alternator so I could do some cleanup. I didn't look at the returned parts closely at the time, but now I'm wondering if something is missing. In the photo you can see that the alternator bearing is recessed back from the front face. Should there be a sleeve or spacer of some sort to keep the fan away from the face? If I put the washer on the shaft first, it does keep the fan off the face, but of course that would cause the washer to rub the face.

What am I missing (overlooking)? What is the proper position of the washer?

    Thanks, Mike

I believe their should be a spacer between the bearing and the fan.
It transfers the thrust from the nut back through the bearing inner race to the internal shoulder.

    May help.

Hopefully you have an alternator rebuilder in your area. They should have the spacer.
If not let me know. I have one I can pull apart and get the measurements. I will make one for you.

You need a collar (spacer). It goes on first. Next goes the fan. Then, the pulley, washer, and nut. It was GM #1959991 but it's discontinued. It had an ID of 0.675", an OD of 0.875", and a length of 0.230".

Thanks for the offer Rick and for the specs and sequence of the parts Joe. There is an alternator shop in the area and I'll check there.

I think you should ask your friend to check around for the missing spacer before visiting an alternator shop. If he didn't realize it was a separate component from the shaft he may not have realized when if fell off.
