    Re: 69 Metal Headlight Shield

This is the metal shield from driver's side. Note that it is shaped almost exactly like the plastic shields commonly found and even has a bit of a "finger". As Terry already suggested, although the metal is thin it is not as easy to deflect as the plastic one from passenger side so perhaps this was another version of the tech fix. Looks too exact and clean to been done by an individual but you never know.

The headlight shields are behind the front grilles. When the headlights are down these shields protect the lamps from stone damage as the car is driven. There are three different configurations.

For those in possession of the 1968-69 TIM&JG 6th Edition the three configurations are illustrated in Fig E 6.11 on page 74. The text that describes the shields begins on that page. That text refers to a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) released in May of 1969, That TSB is 69-T-31, It is in the back of that TIM&JG and is the last TSB before the pages from Chevrolet Service News begins. (I could go on a rant about my unsuccessful attempts to get the reference pages at the back of the manuals to be numbered, but there is no point to that. Those with the power to do anything about that didn't think it would be useful.)

Today a brief conversation with one of my colleagues resulted in his recall that there were interim instructions to dealers to staple a rubber "finger" to the first style shields until the later style became available. Neither the above referenced TSB nor a quick scan of the other reference material in the back of the TIM&JG reveals those instructions, but the search goes on.

There were only two sets of part numbers. 1968-E1969 was GM #3930415 and 3930416. L1969-72 was GM #3966559 and 3966560. So, apparently, there was a revision to the second set of part numbers to include the "notches" in the lower corners and, perhaps, other features.

The GM #3930415 was discontinued from SERVICE in October, 1969 and replaced by the 3966559 which was discontinued without supersession in January, 1993. The GM #3930416 was discontinued from SERVICE in July, 1970 and replaced by GM #3966560 which was discontinued without supersession in 1984.

I agree that whoever fabricated this shield did a pretty good job but I still think it's a field fabrication. It might have been a good sheet metal man that did the job.

Yeah, seems more likely than me having the "super rare, 1 of 1, headlight shield" .

          Thanks everyone for the help!
