Receipt327ShortBlk..jpgHi Paul attached is the receipt from my purchase of a "CE" partial block (not a warranty item). It is stamped with a CE and then some #. Having said that, the CE is not specific to warranty partial blocks .

Generally with the possible exception of recall parts and the failure of parts sold directly to the public or wholesaled to other automotive businesses parts departments didn't get involved in service department warranty or order parts specified as warranty. They ordered parts for resale. They were compensated no matter the reason the part went out.

Yep, all the same no difference physically. The difference was only with the end payer. Either customer pay or GM which would be warranty. In GM's case they paid at a lower rate for parts and labor than retail and wholesale customers. The only time that CE number might come into play with warranty is if the service part failed for a warrantable reason.

        Paul------

I agree with Dan and Mark. I believe that the "CE" stampings were on both warranty and over-the-counter blocks. As Dan mentions, the blocks were obtained by the dealer the same way through GMSPO.

If that is correct, then a CE block would only indicate a motor had been changed. It would indicate a certain time frame, but would not insure it was a dealer warranty repair or even if it was original configuration without documentation. I guess what I am saying is that without proper documentation, a CE block car would be the same as a NOM car or am I missing something.

You have it exactly right. Or as they used to say in these parts in days of yore, "You Got'er Pontiac". Many jump to the conclusion that a CE block is automatically a warranty replacement. More often it is not because GM was not quick to replace engines, transmissions or paint entire cars.

All the CE means is that the block is a factory replacement part. But if it is dated within the warranty period of the car, the chances are high that it was a warranty replacement because it is unlikely the owner would pay for a new block or short block himself if he could get one on the warranty. If the heads and manifold are dated well for the car vin that would support the likelihood that there was a warranty replacement of the block in the car's history.

If the owner bought a whole factory replacement engine to put a big block engine in a small block car, the block would not have the CE stamp but rather the whole Tonawanda date and usage code, but no vin.

Per Dom's request, here are shots of his CE stamp that I have uploaded for him. I magnified one - and cropped the other just a bit.
Are you OK with these, Dom?

A few photo enhancements (Jack Morocco?) might be interesting on the space between the "E" and the "5".

                        Mark,
Thanks, yes I am and maybe could have done a better job of taking the pics. One thing That I have done on all my rebuilds was stone block the head surface and the heads to make sure they are true. The stone shows any voids, but maybe to much stone in this case? Also I do not get notification on my thread via E-mail!
