    1967 s/b water pump

    Fellow members,
The original water pump on my 67 327/300 hp (A/C, P/S) is leaking and needs to be rebuilt or replaced. Since it's a very low mileage car (19,500 mi), I'd like to keep it as original as possible so my first choice is to rebuild it myself or have it done by a professional. Should I attempt it never having done it before--I do have a press. Alternatively, who do you all trust to do this service if it's to tricky to do it at home? Paragon and Long Island both sell the kits, any preferences here?
I especially welcome the advice of those who have done it or had it done previously.

    Re: 1967 s/b water pump

    Richard,
I have been rebuilding Corvette water pumps since 1978 and offer a rebuilding service to rebuild your original 3782608 water pump to original GM specs using the best water pump parts available including the original cast iron impeller(the rebuild kits offered by the Corvette parts vendors use the stamped steel impeller). Do not attempt to rebuild it yourself as you risk breaking the casting by not supporting it properly. If your water pump is original to your engine and has not been painted, I offer a "Survivor Rebuild" service where the paint and the grease and grung are not touched. The price to rebuild your water pump to original GM specs is $200.00 which includes a lifetime warranty and UPS shipping back to you. If you do not have the correct 3782608 water pump I have over 150 rebuilt "608" water pumps ready to ship.

Hi Richard, I’ve used Ron Burke to rebuild my water pump and I am very satisfied with his work. He out in Arizona, phone number 480-720-8000.

        Richard,
I wouldn't hesitate sending my original water pump to Mr. Mock...possibly the best in the business. And, a lifetime guarantee!!

Hi Bill, Just curious.... When you rebuild the pumps do your kits include identical sized shafts and hub/impeller holes as compared to original GM sizes?

Several years ago I researched and couldn't find any kits where you could use the original hub & cast iron impeller. Appears the industry went to metric shafts and the original GM hub/impeller couldn't be used with the new bearing/shaft assembly. I wrote about it attached below.

I've recently seen some new kits on the market that claim the new bearing/shaft assembly is sized for original hubs/impellers.
          Opinions on these?

          Thanks,
          Rich

In view of the responses, I will send it out and have it done professionally. In the next day or two I plan to remove the pump, look at it and ascertain that it is indeed a 608. In the meanwhile, do any of you here recall any pertinent article(s) in our RESTORER magazine? I'd be very interested in learning about the process and what is involved even if I don't tackle the job myself.
Thank you for the replies thus far.

Do you use the OE type 5/8" ball-ball bearing or the more durable 5/8" ball-roller bearing?

                Re: 1967 s/b water pump

I've spent the past two snowy days going through my collection of RESTORER magazines in the hope of finding articles dealing with the leaky water pump problem but thus far have come up empty. I guess I'm just postponing the inevitable--warming up the garage and removing the pump to send it off to have it rebuilt. If anybody has come across an article on the subject please let me know. Today or tomorrow I'll know better what I'm dealing with in terms of an original pump or just another replacement. Mine does not have a bypass hole/plug on top so I'm hopeful.

                  Richard,

The link below takes you to the "Restorer Index" on the NCRS website.

I saw three articles that pop up when you search for "water pump"...only one that I saw looked applicable, but you may want to use other search terms, too...

                  thx,
                  Mark

                    Mark,
Thanks for the tip and link to the Restorer Index. I wasn't aware it was available online. I did a search and, like you, came up with the three articles, none of which applies. Today we'll hit into the forties and into the fifties tomorrow and Sat, so no more excuses. I'll take some pics and then get started on the r&r.
                    THX to all who've responded.

Replacing a Corvette water pump is a very simple task. All you need are a few hand tools, antifreeze, a little time, and the right pump.

BIG NOTE never use a 7/8" IMPACT socket. Its OD is too big. Trust me on this one.

Well, here it is. Numbers correct for late 67. Off it goes for a rebuild, which after 53 years I don't begrudge. When I get it back from the rebuilder I'll post pics and update on the process so that others can benefit from my experience as I've done from others.
