    Carter AFB replacement

My 1965 with 327-300 still has the original carburetor. It has been rebuilt, but it might be time for a change. Has anyone found a suitable replacement for the AFB that will still accept the original air cleaner?

Isn't the new Eldelbrock carburetor just a rebranded AFB design from 60 years ago? Get one with a detached choke and check the fuel line connection.

With that said, why is it "time for a change" for the original? It's designed for your engine and if rebuilt properly will probably perform the best.

I do understand the fun with tinkering with different carburetors (I have three for my Corvette), and having a spare can be handy at times.

Thanks for the info Mark. I'd like to use the original. It might just be time for another rebuild.

Thank you Chris. I'm getting lots of good advice here. My car is mostly original under the hood. I'd like to keep it that way.

The top of your existing stock AFB carburetor - the air horn - will fit onto a new Edelbrock Performer carburetor. You can buy a new Edelbrock and swap air horns. That way you get a new carburetor, and all your stock '65 stuff will bolt up. Linkage, choke, gasoline line, and air filter.

Of course, you may not need a new carburetor. But if your heart is set on a new one. This'll work.

Mr. Ritchie, Thanks for the input. I hadn't considered that option. If I can't get the original carb working to my satisfaction, I will try replacing it and swapping parts.

What a great option for cars with an AFB carburetor.

It's curious Eldelbrock chose the AFB for their current line of carburetors. The design is from the 50s. From a street performance perspective, the Q-Jet is a better architecture. Yes, it's spread bore design is limited to mostly GM cars but that's a large market.

                  Roger,

The AFB is a very good carburetor and well worth saving. Get a pro to bush the throttle bores (if needed) and overhaul it.
