454 Battery and Ground Cable Connections

I'm connecting the battery and ground cables!

- Are the star washers used on the positive battery cable at the solenoid, the negative battery cable at the frame and on both ends of the engine ground cable an external star?

- The 1970 AIM shows washer PN 138485 for the positive and engine ground cable, but PN 138494 for the negative battery cable. How do these differ?

- Does the 454 have the 3856490 clip that goes around the solenoid and holds the battery cable in place? AIM 12-A11 shows the clip for the standard engine; AIM LS5-A5 doesn't show this clip but doesn't show cabling either so the clip may be a detail that's not shown. I didn't see this mentioned in the JG.

Mark the solenoid is a lock washer, and grounds to frame should have star washers. As a rule painted surfaces have a star to Get a-bite through the paint. Mark did you Look at AIM for that clip that holds the wires.It may be in back of AIM under LS5/LS6. I know my small block has it.

The engine ground cable uses 5/16" bolts, while the battery cables use 3/8" bolts. And Edward says the positive cable uses a regular lock washer on the solenoid and the other cables use star washers. Yet AIM shows washer PN 138485 for the positive and engine ground cables.

So maybe: 5/16" star washers for the engine ground cables, 3/8" star washer for negative battery cable, 3/8" regular lock washer for positive battery cable?

Regarding the clip around the solenoid, AIM is not clear. It shows the clip for the standard engine on 12-A11; the LS5 section does not show the clip but doesn't show cables or connection details either.

GM #138485 is a 5/16" external tooth star washer. GM #138494 is a 7/16" external tooth star washer.

I'll chalk this up to an AIM error. The 1970 AIM shows washer PN 138485 for the positive and engine ground cable, yet the positive cable at the solenoid is a 3/8" stud so a 5/16" washer won't fit.

And does this confirm that the solenoid connection uses a star washer?
