Another reference, Mar64 car, body never removed or hit, steering box never removed, original rag joint. Have taken the column and dash out 6-8 times. Measuring from spokes on wheel to blinker lights on dash, Dr side 13" while pass side 12.25" So 3/4" tilted to right. Recall that was normal for GM cars, have no idea who said that back in the 70's

Years ago, decades maybe, I noticed the steering column in my '63 was off angle. I thought "hmmmmmm......" and then put it out of my mind until these threads happened.

The body of my '63 has never been hit nor has it been off the frame. I did R&R the column 22 years ago, but that was after discovering the off-angle condition.

Gents, Thank you all for the great input for my research. It has been educational and fun. Special thanks to John Pickens for bringing this up in the other thread.

Alan, You said you heard about this in the 70's. I wonder if it was John Hinckley.

Here's another data point too. Jack Morocco and I converse often relating to lots of technical info. He's great at doing research and using some cool computer tools he sent me some images to look at.

This one is a hi-res GM image of a 1965 Corvette interior that he worked on. Follow the grid lines and it shows the wheel/column canted to the right.

This one is a 1963 image he had. Also to the right.

It appears that this "feature" is quite prominent in the C2 cars. It would be interesting to see some C3 images also if anyone would care to jump in.

Since it wasn't a design requirement to cant to the right we won't have to worry about appending all of the Judging Guides!

One other tidbit regarding the C1 cars. Since the steering box and column is a integrated assembly, those cars require more detail when it comes to alignment. It's important to shim the steering box to frame, as required and specified in the AIMs, to get the upper end of the column properly centered into the firewall/dash platform/cluster. There are also shims and spacers used where the column attaches to the dash platform, as required.

Variations of all related areas will cause some cars to require shims and some to not. I've seen it vary quite a bit on the C1's I've restored.

Jim, Appears to be around 3/4" difference to the cluster, like most we've been seeing.

              Thanks....Rich

John, Thank you for adding that detailed info for your '73. Appears to be very similar to the C2's that have shown up.

                  Very interesting.
