Re: Modern Replacement Radios for C2's
Actually the first AAR radios were total junk, but the later ones are now OK - I've had four of them and installed 4 others for folks; the last one went into a '67 Chevelle SS but the face and knobs are stilly cheesy IMO. There is nothing wrong with the dash speaker I recommended above and you can hear in the video; I don't care for the speaker boxes in the rear of our cars.... The look is not something I care for and if the worst should happen and you have an accident anything that large in the rear can be dangerous (ask me how I know!)
The real problem is the AAR radio distorts at high output; regardless of speaker, this can be overcome using an inexpensive AMP with that same speaker and an optional passive bazooka for some thump; here is my 61 and as good as it gets in a roadster:
The pictures below show that same setup in a 67 Chevelle and the sound is very good even in that huge cockpit. You are never going to get concert hall quality in vintage Corvettes not enough room for good stereo separation and acoustically they are 55 gallon oil drums, not even counting the ambient noise level when underway.
The Tayman original radio conversion provides "fade" and "balance" features through the original knobs digitally to preserve the original look.
The functions aren't that complicated and I don't know how much you set those characteristics anyway.
Everyone has their own opinion on looks and quality of sound; I've provided several examples now of how to keep the original appearance with decent sound which is my personal preference.Last edited by Frank D.; February 14, 2021, 01:36 AM.- Top

Re: Modern Replacement Radios for C2's
Frank, I have to disagree with you on those 6x9 dual coil speakers, they sound like crap as mentioned. I solved that problem by mounting two 5 inch Pyle speakers at a 45 degree angle to each other. I have two 6 inch Pyles in the kick panels powered by a amp and a sub woofer in trunk powerered by an amp. I do agree it will never sound like my home unit, (McIntosh, old school), but going down the hiway at 70 it still sounds really good. I do realize everyones ears are different and what sounds good to one might not sound so good to another. Some people would rather have great sound than be stone stock looking.- Top

Re: Modern Replacement Radios for C2's
I have no issue with whatever anyone wants to do with their cars...the solution I've laid out meets my parameters for originality and sound....
I never want to look in the cockpit and see added components that are not what the factory would have delivered - that's just how I roll.- Top
