C2 Headlight Motor bench Testing problem

Okay, I took the two motors out to refresh them by cleaning and painting the exterior. When I bought the car, they were both slow and struggling. When I put them back together and bench tested them, one works fine, the other is as dead as a door nail. Not even a click when I put power to the motor. Everything seems to be in order, so I'm looking for suggestions on what to look at or what am I missing?

I prefer not to send it out if I can fix it myself.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks

    Jerry,

Where and how are you connecting ground?

If painted, maybe just a bad connection?

Painted? C-2 headlight motors had NO paint so maybe you should consider sending them to Richard.

JR, IIRC you've done way more of these than me. I agree originals were not painted but I admit I've painted my wife's '63 coupe's motor cases years ago just to keep from rusting. Wish we still had that one.

Jerry, When you cleaned and painted, what exactly did you do? How much of the assemblies did you dismantle?

I just thought of a few more things. Is the fault mechanical or electrical? (rhetorical)

        mechanical possibilities:

When you turn the emergency thumbwheel at the end of the armature, does the mechanism move? If not, maybe the shaft free play screw is too tight or the gear case is jammed internally.

I have rebuilt some motors using repro gears but they were too thick and when tightening the 4 gear case screws, the mechanism jammed. This was quite some time ago though and I've heard they corrected the newer gears. Another possibility is the washers for the cast gear are in the wrong position/order.

Try loosening the case cover screws a bit and see if it changes. If it does then open up the gear case for a closer look.

        electrical possibilities:

You can connect a ohm meter between clean motor case ground and each power terminal. You should get a very low reading, a few ohms or less IIRC. If not, there is a open circuit somewhere inside. e.g. .......

There is a ground braided wire spot welded to the case going to one of the motor brushes. If that isn't connected... no ground to the motor.

There is a internal over current/circuit breaker contactor inside the motor. Dirty contacts or misadjusted or loose connection could cause fault.

Open Field windings inside motor or brushes or bad armature.

As you can see, several possibilities.

          Thanks guys,

          1. yes, I did paint the body of the motor and I will scratch away on the ground to see.
          2. yes, I did replace the drive gear as the old one was quite chewed up. I will try the suggestion of loosening the case screws to see if that helps. If so, should I grind down some of the gear to make room?
          3. I think I put the washers back correctly. The black washer should have the curved part in the center facing up as I recall.
          4. The braided wires are still in tact.

Thanks and I'll keep you posted.

One other thing, the thumb wheel turns relatively freely.

Re: C2 Headlight Motor bench Testing problem

Jerry asked me if I would take a look the motor that he was having trouble with. It came today around 1 PM. After a few other tasks I decided to test it. It didn't move. Then I decided to dive into it right away as I was curious why it was failing.

I created a new thread showing the diagnosis and repair process....... HERE
