I'm not 100% sure but I think it was zinc. However, it's also possible it was a blackened finish.

Ed, I'm not much of a part number guy and sadly all my C3 cars are gone but as I recall the 3 screws are chrome (round head cross recess) and the one upper screw is black. It should be included in the latest TIM & JG. The 6th edition 68/69 Guide was just issued as well and it would be the same.

A little blurry, taken without flash, but shows the finish best. 2 black and chrome near the switch.

                    Leonard------

Are these pan head screws (i.e. base of screw head rests on surrounding surface and entire screw head sits above surrounding surface) or are they tapered base oval head screws (i.e. head is slightly convex and base is tapered to fit into countersink in plate so that the screw head is mostly flush with surrounding surface)? I can't really tell from the photo but they appear more like oval head tapered base screws.

Then, regardless of what the AIM says, these are not GM #9419328. These are likely GM #9427633 (single forwardmost screw) and GM #9427690 (2 rearward screws).

The GM #9427633 is a sheet metal screw of size #8 X 5/8". It is phillips drive, tapered base, oval head, with captured conical washer. Head size is 3/8" including washer. Finish is chrome.

The GM #9427690 is a tapping screw of size 8-32 X 9/16". It is phillips drive, oval head, tapered base and the head is 1/4". It has a phosphate black finish.

These same screws are used for the non A/C wiper switch plate.

                            Edward------

The only pan head screws anywhere on the dash that I am aware of are those which retain the air duct over the center console gauges on non A/C cars. I don't think the arrangement is the same on A/C cars but what little I can see of the screw in the lower end of Leonard's original post and photo, the heads appear the same. On non A/C cars these are of GM #9418359 and are pan head sheet metal screws of size #8 X 5/8", phillips drive, head diameter of 5/16", and zinc plated. These screws do not need to be blackened because they are, essentially, not visible when installed.
