    Problem with my 69 clock

    Guys,

I'm trying to decide what to do with the clock from my 69. I had it restored a few years ago and I recently installed the center console during my restoration and the clock wasn't working so I pulled it and sent it back to the restorer. When it came back it worked off and on for a few days and then stopped. I just spoke to them and they said pull it and send it back, which of course is a super hassle but I'm trying to decide what to do. He said given the repeated problems he can replace the mechanism with a functioning one and it SHOULD be ok, or he can replace it with a quartz movement and fix it for certain. My question is if I'm planning on having the car judged should I worry about the change in the sweep of the second hand from the factory to the quartz mechanism? Think I can live with a small deduction if it means never having to take apart the console again but wondering if this is something that is even judged or not.

      Mike,
If you decide to convert your clock to a Quartz movement, you will receive a full deduction.
A full deduction in operations judging will be 25 points.

Buy a new one. There is a specialty manufacturer out there who owns the original tooling and makes these in both mechanical and quartz versions. They are identical to the originals once installed. I installed one of the mechanical ones a few years ago and have had zero issues.

Instrument Services Inc has the tooling.
I installed a new clock from them in a 1977 last year. They changed the formula of the paint they use, and the black is flatter than original. If you know this, you can tell when installed. So far, no judge has detected it, however.

The previous clocks from them that I have installed were, as you note, identical. I don't think that's the case any more.
