Factory M21 transmission date X-out: need help understanding reason

These two pictures tell the story--tranny was originally date P 0 T 10 B (M21 built December 10 of 1970). That is X-ed out, and replaced with P 1 A 20 B (M21 built January 20, 71. What would cause them to restamp the assembly date on the case? This car has had two owner, and neither had any idea about numbers, etc., so I know this is factory.

I'd opine that it was something like this: the transmission assembled in December did not pass final inspection. Thereafter, the transmission was disassembled and repaired or it was broken down into component parts and the parts, including the case, used to build other transmissions. In either case, the case was re-stamped with the new final assembly date.

Well, as a Feb car, bad assembly or an implosion on the line would give time to have it redone. Anything on the sidecover or extension that would take it out of the INITIAL assembly time and provide a clue?
