    1970 Shifter / Transmission Bracket & Bolts

    I am putting together a 1970 LT1, with a Muncie transmission.

I am not clear how the Shifter Bracket and rear transmission mount was bolted in.

The Shifter Bracket, goes over top of the cross member (the cross member with the holes through it for the exhaust pipes).

There are two screws that go in the rear side of the cross member, through the part of the Shifter Bracket, that hangs down on the back side of the cross member.

Then, does the rear transmission mount bracket, slide back, on top of the cross member, and under the Shifter Bracket, then two bolts drop down from the top side of the cross member, going though both Rear Transmission Bracket, and through the cross member and those two bolts get washers and nuts that are tightened through that square cut-out in the bottom side of the cross member?

Then are there two more bolts, with the head on top (thread down), that drop down through the two front bolt holes in the Shifter Bracket and through the Rear Transmission Bracket and those get washers and nuts to hold both the Shifter Bracket and Rear Transmission Bracket together in front of the cross member?

Do I have that correct? I did not see that detail on the assembly manual nor in the TIMJ Guide.

Pictures and some details would sure be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Jim

Sorry to ramble on a bit previously. I do now see how the bolts go up through the rear transmission Bracket and through the exhaust hanger and through the rubber/metal mount that bolts on to the rear of the transmission.

Any details pictures or drawings would help me get this finished off.

    Thanks

    Jim

        Thanks John.

It looks like a 73 is slightly different, where you have only one bolt shown just behind the two larger bolts that go up through the rubber transmission mount, but these are still a big help.

        Thanks

        Jim

James, second bolt is there, just hiding from view in the previous photo.

Yep, I saw that when I crawled under mine just now. They are a little off-set so only one could be seen in your first photo.

One more thing... those particular two bolts, they must go up through the Transmission Bracket and through the shifter bracket with a nut on the top-side, no washer, is that correct?

              Thanks!

Yes, you nay need multiple washers, or no washers for a 1970 at number 6. If the shift lever contacts the console when placed in reverse shim washers will need to be added.

Re: 1970 Shifter / Transmission Bracket & Bolts

Great information from you all. I don't have welded nuts on the shifter bracket, so I will use nuts from the top, just like the two rear shifter bracket bolts. And I understand possibly needing the washers to shim for the position of the shift lever in the console.

                    Thanks
