Joe-All I can vouch for is 69 ser# 307xx. I ordered this car, still have it, and it is also guaranteed to be original.(car only has 56xx miles on it)
Look closely at the lower r/h corner of the sticker-It says "printed in"-rest of the corner is gone.
I am not taking sides on this issue- just stating facts about #307xx.
What ser. #is your lid from?
        Maybe running change?

thanks for the pic , what i find interesting is not the fact i am back to square one on the printed in usa theory is the location of stickers in both pictures so close to bottom ring, thanks again

The lid with the label I pictured is from a very early 1969 built in October, 1968 (not my car; it belongs to a friend of mine that's the original owner).

Now that I look closer at the photo I posted, it may be that the "printed in usa" is there. Most of the corner is gone but there might be enough left to see the first part of the word "printed".

See my recent post above. It may well be that the "printed in usa" was on the original label I pictured with just the first part of the word "printed" remaining.

While we are on the subject- I don't know if there is any questions, but I have an original L72, and both original air cleaner stickers say "printed in usa".

I'm no expert about air cleaner stickers, but if it said "Printed in China", can we agree it's probably not original?

Hi Mark- So- yes, I agree that all parties would agree with your statement that "printed in China" on an air cleaner sticker would probably indicate that it is not original-Thanks for clearing that up for us!
Back to the this post though-Has anything been decided? We have heard from a kinda early 69, and a kinda late 69. Maybe it was a running change thing?
Lets hear from some other folks with original air cleaner decals.-66,67,68,70,71,72?
As I stated before- I can only positively attest to 69 ser#307xx

What about the repro's? don't they usually find an original piece to copy?

If it was only that simple. Many years ago, in the last century, there were reproductions that had "Printed in USA" and reproductions that didn't have that. Take your choice.

These photos show the base stock pretty well...having been in the paper industry for 20 plus years and selling all kinds printing papers I have always figured it was Vapor metallized Wet strength Beer Label stock - Metallized appears somewhat like foil however was not true foil or foil laminate, also much cheaper than foil or foil laminate.

Not at all. I am saying there were reproductions with and without the "Printed in USA" One "feature" of all the reproductions was mentioned by Joe L. The glue on the back or reproductions is inferior to the original label glue. That is a big hurdle to solve when using a reproduction label.
