Hello everyone, I hope all are safe from all that's going on. Just got my car out today for a little ride and I need some help, the passenger side door makes a terrible popping sound when starting to close. I've tried putting a dab of grease on the bar in there but no difference in the sound. The drivers side makes no sound. Also, when the bar on the door hinge hits the pad on the door frame, the door seems to have some resistance. More so than the drivers side. Any ideas?

Are you sure the spring bar is not cracked or broken? In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1973 passenger side door
I had a similar pop on my 73 after it came back from the paint shop.
The serrated roller on the hinge not rotating, therefore the spring was having to "POP" over the roller.
I got it to rotate, lubricated, pop went away.
Might check to see if the serrated roller is rotating.- Top

You should be able to tell if the spring is broken or cracked without having to remove the hinge. You should also definitely check the roller mentioned by Roger. This can also be easily done without hinge removal. I'll bet the problem is one or the other. Seizure of the roller is a VERY common problem and can also lead to spring breakage. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
