Have any of you installed an Ecklers chambered exhaust? I have a small block, four speed with an exhaust system that needs replacement and never liked the look of stock muflers. the system is advertised to sound similar to side pipes. Are there install issues? Id like your thoughts. Tom

Re: 1972 vette - ecklers chabered exhaust
Thomas,
I installed a chambered exhaust system on my '67 BB, which I bought from Allen's Exhaust at Carlisle about 15+ years ago.
My recollection is the install is actually easier than the original system because you're not wrestling with the muffler end as much (my original was a one-piece N11 off-road system, which I wanted to preserve as long as I could). I'd think the same would be true for your '72 SB.
Just bolt everything in there kinda loose until you're sure everything lines up and then tighten it all down...
The sound is wonderful IMO...no issues since installed...thx, Markthx,

Agree completely with Mark. Put them on my small block, 4 speed, 69 convertible a few years ago as I didn't want to spring for side pipes (nor did the car come with them) but wanted that sound. It does sound like side pipes and the installation was a breeze, fit the original path, etc. You do have to change the mounting bracket by the trans I think as these are 2.5" and the originals were 2", but it's pretty simple. The part is readily available at Eckler's and elsewhere. Allens makes them for Ecklers and they're really good quality. Enjoy.

Re: 1972 vette - ecklers chabered exhaust
I've only been in one car with an Allen's chambered exhaust- a 1996 LT1. It has a nice tone, but after 30 minutes it became annoyingly loud and gave me a headache.
For driving, I prefer a quiet, powerful car. Maybe it's because I'm over 30? To each their own.Mark Edmondson

Re: 1972 vette - ecklers chabered exhaust
As noted, Allen's makes them. Ecklers makes nothing any more.
So, buy on price no matter what vendor it may be. Allen's may even have a "sale" since they're probably not attending shows.Vice-Chairman (West), Michigan Chapter NCRS

Re: 1972 vette - ecklers chabered exhaust
Curious! Will the original exhaust tips and rear hangers still work with these? Or will modifications need to be made?
What about on the '73 with one year only tips and hangers?Jimmy

Re: 1972 vette - ecklers chabered exhaust
I had Allens on my 69 15 -20 years ago. They didn't fit, nor come close to it. I had to have a muffler shop cut and bend them. I didn't like the sound or looks and sold them after a season for $100. I hope they fit better now. I bought them directly from Mike Allen, I believe I read he passed away the past year or so if I recall. Mike was a good guy.

Re: 1972 vette - ecklers chabered exhaust
I guess those of us who are commenting should specify whether we did side pipes or under-car systems.
my experience was with an under-car system.
sorry your experience was "not-so-good" Gary...mine was (and has been) the exact opposite for the past 15 or so years.
Totally agree with you, too...my experience with Allen's was professional and enjoyable. Class outfit (at least back then).thx,

Re: 1972 vette - ecklers chabered exhaust
I had 2" pipes before so the original tips didn't fit. As I recall, the correct size tips came with the exhaust from Allen's. They also send the correct sized U bolts and hangers. The only thing I had to buy separately was the bracket that mounts around the rear of the trans, if memory serves.
