What are these broken plastic pieces inside the steering column? 1970 tilt & tele

When I removed the steering wheel from my '70 tilt & tele column to paint it, I found these plastic bits (first photo) inside. Some were along the base of the spring and some were at the bottom of the housing (second photo).

Surprisingly everything worked before I took this apart.

What is this part and where does it go? I couldn't find a diagram showing this assembly in the shop manual or parts catalogs.

    Thanks guys!

    Mark,

That looks very much like #7808385, which is a horn contact carrier snap ring retainer. It's very common to find this part broken. The GM part is discontinued but reproductions are available.

      These always break.
      Always.

I bought 2 last time I purchased them so I will have a spare at all times.

        Thanks guys!

Where does it go? Do I need to pull the hub to install it?

Is this in the shop manual? I don't see it.

Lookup Jim Shea, for his steering column service guides.

Jim Shea's site, http://jimshea.corvettefaq.com/, has a treasure trove of information in it. I had to replace that same part and used his information. I don't recall which of these documents has the procedure but dig in.

Thanks guys. I haven't yet found this piece on Jim Shea's site but I'm still looking (as Gary said, there's a lot of material to wade through). But I did find this photo with the part listing on CorvetteCentral.com:

Tilt Tele Horn Contact Carrier Retainer.jpg

The good news is the part is available and it's less than $10. The bad news is I need to pull the hub and remove some more parts. I'm hoping the orientation of the retainer is obvious and installation is straight forward.

I downloaded Jim Shea's papers and I'll see if I still have them. Relying on memory here but the descriptions in the service manual are pretty detailed (I hope that's where I got them. )

Thanks Jim. I have access to Shea's articles; I just need to find the section about this retainer.

Maybe it's in there but I didn't find anything in the service manual. I only looked in section 9 (Steering).

                    Mark,
I found Jim's papers, some quite worn and wrinkled but still legible. Send me your contact information and I can scan what I have and see if it helps. It has the full schematic of the Tilt/tele steering column but I don't remember that this job is that difficult.

Yep, that's one. The other one I have is called 1969-82Corvette Tilt/Tele Steering Column Disassembly Instructions.

I found this Shea paper earlier but the drawing doesn't show the retainer. Am I just missing it? I was looking for a drawing showing the location and orientation of the part along with R&R procedure.

I'll order the part and post photos of its installation (or ask for more help!) to help the next person.

From the Corvette Central photo posted earlier, it looks like it goes below the spring. Maybe its orientation will become obvious with it in my hands.

Mark, I have step-by-step photos of the assembly of my 72 tilt/tele column when i repaired it a couple of years ago. I can send them if you want them. Like the good doctor I've had to replace that part once before.
