Re: Power steering control valve cap question
Edward------
The reason for the different stampings is that there was a slight change in the valve during the 1963-82 period. The change involved a change in steering effort that was accomplished via a change in a valve spring.
The 1963-73 Corvette control valve assembly was GM #5691955 and this was the valve with the cap stamped "X". The 1974-82 control valve assembly was GM #7825636 and this was the valve with cap stamped "C". The GM #5691955 was discontinued from SERVICE in October, 1982 and replaced by the 7825636. So, any valve assembly for a 1963-73 Corvette obtained from GM after that time would actually be the 1974-82 assembly. I believe that all of the "reproduction"/replacement valves have actually been of the 7825636.
By the way, there may even have been others since other Chevrolet models also used this basic valve and may have had different calibrations (and cap stampings). In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
