1963 Differential housing cover

I have looked through the archives for information regarding the '63 casting # 3830303 differential housing cover but cannot find the specific information I am looking for. Were the '63 differential covers dated coded like '64 and newer covers? Also the TJM shows an axle ratio round metal tag symbol affixed to the 5:00 bolt position on the differential cover next to the fill hole. The TJM does not make any comment on different configurations of the round metal tag for the various axle ratios. I would be interested in the shape of the tag for a CD 3.70 ratio.

I don't recall seeing a date on the cover, there is a date cast into the main case and a date stamped on the bottom at assembly. I did see something years ago that showed the different tags which were used but I can't remember where I saw it. I went out to look at my car but with the truck under it I can't see the tag however from memory I know the 3.08 tag which is on my car is missing a small pie shape and the 4.11 tag is about the size of the missing piece from my car. I would think the 3.70 would be about 1/3 of the radius 3.55 is about 1/2 and 3.36 is about 2/3's

Thanks for your feedback. I am under the assumption the casting dates on the diff cover started with '64 production. My main diff case is dated correctly, just a '68 cover on it. Paragon makes a reproduction gear ratio tag so I will check with them for the correct style of the 3.70 ratio. Maybe I can find an original once I know what I'm looking for.

The reason that it has a 1968-dated cover is likely because someone broke one of the ears off the original cover when they were IMPROPERLY re-installing the rear spring.

Wayne the is a casting date at the bottom drivers corner, also on the very bottom there should be a Assy. Date code sometimes it can be rusty and need cleaning.

I have the dates on the main differential housing. My question was, is the differential cover that the rear spring bolts to date coded? I believe not. but just checking with other '63 owners to make sure.

Well, it's like this: if you can find a cover with a date that "works" for a 1963, then there was at least one 1963 that had a dated cover. I think you'll be looking for a LONG time for that cover, though.
