I have a set of 5 matching Kelsey Hayes welded dog bone wheels. All are dated July 1956. For how many model years were these wheels used? I know 1956 and 1957 but were they used on 58 and 59 as well? Thanks

Re: Welded Dog Bone Wheels
Richard,
Attached is a good wheel description that was assembled from multiple sources such as "The Rev" and others.

Re: Welded Dog Bone Wheels
1.From the above 56 -62 Wheel Description " 53 - 55 5" wheels are riveted with a large dome like center section. Correct Corvettewheels will not have provisions for the center clips that hold dog dish style hubcapstypically found other passenger cars wheels of the era. Part # 3687980 Group 5.803,5/8” offset, Motor Wheel cross reference #X 40078 ― wheels were Chevrolet andCorvette only"
What does the description "large dome like center section" mean? Is it like what the early Ford Hot Rodders call smoothie wheels?
2. I have difficulty with the time line for wheels listed as still having riveted centers.Last edited by Dan A.; August 1, 2020, 05:18 PM.- Top

Re: Welded Dog Bone Wheels
Dan, The large dome center will lack the extra ring depicted on the photo on Gary's attachment. The center mounted hubcap matches the contour of the dome as well. Common design feature among early 50's Chevy's even trucks without split rims.
The 57 - 62 wide wheels (5.5 in) were all riveted.- Top

I know what this large dome-like center section looks like. The wheels on my unrestored '54 #3300 are not constructed like that. Instead they look generally like the 1960 wheels pictured in the .pdf, although I don't remember them having the "ring" in the picture.

Re: Welded Dog Bone Wheels
The '58 to '60 TIMJ says that "dog-bone" wheels were used through early '60 and that later '60's had welded wheels without the "dog-bone" cut-outs. My car is a January 28, 1960 build so I debated whether to go with "dog-bone" or non "dog-bone" wheels. I elected to put "dog-bone" wheels on the car. I hope that since there was not an exact date or VIN for the change-over, that I will not get dinged in judging. But, you know what they say about opinions....Keith MacRae
