I found a AC Fuel pump in my parts box, with the Part Number stamp 6640769 and a date code of 172D. I know the 172 is the Julian Date but, what year does the D stand for? Or is it a replacement designation? Any thoughts, please!

Re: Fuel Pump year build code
It's possibly that it could have been a mis-stamping error at the factory where the person stamping used a "D" instead of a "O" because he or she needed glasses or maybe new glasses, who knows. Do you have a magnifying glass? Does your Fuel pump have a "AC" casting on it? The 40769 AC fuel pump was sold as GM # 6470308 in Gr. 3.900.

Re: Fuel Pump year build code
Dave, Yes it has the AC marking on the side. Can I send you a so so photo. The clarity is not the best so if it's not good enough I can try again to capture the numbers and letter. My e-mail is tomrostkow@aol.com I can't seem to get the photo on the thread reply.
Thanks. If you want to call it quits that's ok. Tom- Top

I'll add that the photo I showed of a 78, the letter at first looked like a 7, then a Y and finally when I took a photo and zoomed, realized it was a T!Tom Russo

Re: Fuel Pump year build code
Well its a C3 fuel pump and the letter is the year code...but not a an early year. Here's the Fuel Pump page for the 3rd edition of the 1975-77, currently under revision. You'll see the last five digits of the part number is stamped on the flange. The 40769 fuel pump was used 70-76.
049P pump is here for 49th day of 1975. This is from a March 1975-built car, so it fits perfectly.
They did not use O for a year code, and as I was discussing with another member I don't think they used I either.

Re: Fuel Pump year build code
The photo has so much "noise" its hard to make out what it is. Noise refers to low-resolution along with pixel count and blur from the need to zoom in, at which point is blurs, rendering, characters illegible.Tom Russo

Re: Fuel Pump year build code
It's the best shot I can get. I can only say looking at it on the car with a magnifying glass it is a "D". At this point it's not worth pursuing. May be when they stamped it they put in the wrong letter. That's life. Thanks for you input.- Top

Re: Fuel Pump year build code
It is a fuel pump I bought and put away back in the mid 70's so, it's not original on the 73 Vette. i was just interested if it could be dated or identified as after market pump. You don't need to pursue. It is what it is. Thanks for your thoughts, Tom- Top
