    Fuel Pump year build code

I found a AC Fuel pump in my parts box, with the Part Number stamp 6640769 and a date code of 172D. I know the 172 is the Julian Date but, what year does the D stand for? Or is it a replacement designation? Any thoughts, please!

Well its a C3 fuel pump and the letter is the year code...but not a an early year. Here's the Fuel Pump page for the 3rd edition of the 1975-77, currently under revision. You'll see the last five digits of the part number is stamped on the flange. The 40769 fuel pump was used 70-76.

Are you sure that it is the letter "D" and not the letter "O" (for 1975). The letter "D" would represent the year 1964 but as far as from my researching AC fuel pump date codes many years ago the Julian date coding was not used in 1964 on AC fuel pumps.

II'll assume it's an "O". Is their anyway to check if, the pumps were made with a D stamp may be as a replacement pump in later years?

          Thanks,

          Tom

            Tom,
It's possibly that it could have been a mis-stamping error at the factory where the person stamping used a "D" instead of a "O" because he or she needed glasses or maybe new glasses, who knows. Do you have a magnifying glass? Does your Fuel pump have a "AC" casting on it? The 40769 AC fuel pump was sold as GM # 6470308 in Gr. 3.900.

Dave, Yes it has the AC marking on the side. Can I send you a so so photo. The clarity is not the best so if it's not good enough I can try again to capture the numbers and letter. My e-mail is tomrostkow@aol.com I can't seem to get the photo on the thread reply.

Thanks. If you want to call it quits that's ok. Tom

Why not post it here? Click on the icon that when you hover over it it reads insert image.

I'll add that the photo I showed of a 78, the letter at first looked like a 7, then a Y and finally when I took a photo and zoomed, realized it was a T!

This is the best enhancement I can do. Thanks for the tip to adding photo. Fuel Pump.jpg

                    FYI:

049P pump is here for 49th day of 1975. This is from a March 1975-built car, so it fits perfectly.
They did not use O for a year code, and as I was discussing with another member I don't think they used I either.

                      PH,

So what is your thought on the 172D code (Specifically "D" as a year) for Part # 6640769? Just a mistake?

                      Thanks,

The photo has so much "noise" its hard to make out what it is. Noise refers to low-resolution along with pixel count and blur from the need to zoom in, at which point is blurs, rendering, characters illegible.

It's the best shot I can get. I can only say looking at it on the car with a magnifying glass it is a "D". At this point it's not worth pursuing. May be when they stamped it they put in the wrong letter. That's life. Thanks for you input.

I've heard of a D previously. As you note, a better photo would be nice.

What month/year was the car built?

It is a fuel pump I bought and put away back in the mid 70's so, it's not original on the 73 Vette. i was just interested if it could be dated or identified as after market pump. You don't need to pursue. It is what it is. Thanks for your thoughts, Tom
