    70LT1 valve cover removal

Realizing removing lt1 valves covers may be a bit more challenging then the L46.
Does the smog pump and/or anything else need to be removed?

The AIR pump does not have to be removed. Simply remove the left side AIR hose at the backflow valve, unbolt the diverter valve with elbow at the AIR pump, and lay the whole thing back on the right. This procedure is EXACTLY the same as all 1968-1969 small blocks (including those 1969 that have had the valve covers replaced with the aluminum version). If you wish, to make it even easier, remove the right side hose at the backflow valve. Then, you can remove the whole set-up from the car. Don't forget to also remove the vacuum line at the diverter valve or carburetor.

One other thing: if you have the hoses off the valves I would check the valves to insure they are functioning correctly. Inward pressure should not be possible. Failed valves (and they DO fail) will cause the diverter valve and AIR pump to be destroyed. This is also why I NEVER recommend the use of used or "rebuilt" backflow valves. Sometimes, guys do this so that they can have original valves. If one subsequently goes bad and causes the destruction of the diverter valve, they'll be very sorry. I do not think that diverter valves destroyed in this manner can be rebuilt or repaired.

I seem to recall (and that is a dangerous thing) some fuel line interference on the passenger side. My fuel line is bent up at the Y-block for the line from the Y-block to the fuel pump to clear the rocker cover. I know that was done at St Louis or the dealer before the car got into my hands.

When I was taking the carb off, I disconnected the Y block from the pump line. Didnt bother to crawl under and disconnect at the pump. Cant remember if that line came up and crossed the corner of the valve cover.
I'll soon find out. Might be a good time to change that pump line with the new one I have.
