    Holley 4150 Choke Plate

I have a 4150, 2818-1 Holley on my "64 L76. Doing a rebuild & restore (yeah, I know it is a non-original service replacement). Question re the configuration of the choke plate. Should it be flat or "curved"? Mine is curved, meaning it has a slight bend right at the point where it slides into the actuator rod. I also believe that my carb was disassembled and "repaired" at least once by a P/O - there were a few tell-tale signs of that, nothing major. The Holley website lists a "universal" plate for all 4150s and 60s, in the accompanying picture it appears to be a flat plate. I see pics of restored 4150s, some with flat others with curved plates. Which is correct or.... does it make a difference as long as the choke system functions?

Flat, as far as I can remember!

If you are referring to a slight curvature at the top of the choke plate, then it's supposed to be that way for your carburetor as well as many other Holley carbs. The GM part number was 3852460 and the Holley part number was 2R-388.

Joe - yes, that is the plate that was in my carb. Thank you! Interesting design - I suspect that curve mimics an airplane wing, low pressure, fast moving air on the back side, higher pressure slower moving air on the front side - the side the squiters are on. I would think that the reduced air turbulence on the front side would have a tendency to reduce interference with the fuel coming out of the squirters. Just a theory.

BTW - new topic - sort of. When all assembled my choke plate would not go to the full upright position on its own after I tripped the fast idle setting. Of course the carb and all components were stone cold sitting on my workbench. I removed the black plastic choke cover that has the heat sensitive spring inside - I hit it lightly - and I do mean lightly - with a heat gun - the coil began to contact in about 2 seconds! It really began to wind it self tight - this was with mild heat - when it was still in a retracted mode I reassembled everything - choke plate was straight up. Point is - if you have doubts you can test your choke spring with a hair dryer.
