    1970 lower ignition shielding questions

In 2013 I bought this car from the original owner. It was decommissioned at 62,833 miles in 1980 when it hit railroad tracks too hard and broke the rear spring and differential cover tabs. Rear owner had three strokes and was barely able to communicate. In the garage was some ignition shielding for an early C3. A year ago his widow called me and asked me to come and pick up the remaining Corvette parts (1962 and 1970) she had found. Included was a mostly-complete set of ignition shielding. So which are original to the car? I'm fine on the box and the verticals, but the horizontals have me wondering. It is a March build, so it needs all four lowers. And of course, the 70 AIM only shows two lowers. The 69 AIM shows all four, but the left front in 70 demands a hole for a sensor wire that is not included in 69. We don't have a lot in the JG about the lowers other than when the approximate break point between 2 and 4 takes place. So that is all to set the stage for my questions:
First, two pics of the car:
    As found--Johnson's garage (2).jpghome after detailing (3).jpg
First question: Which of these is correct for the right front? One has more distinct stamping in the reinforcements, while the other has less distinct stamping and no lower rolled edge on the end.
Ignition shielding right front (1).jpgIgnition shielding right front (2).jpgIgnition shielding right front (3).jpgIgnition shielding right front (4).jpgIgnition shielding right front (5).jpg

My other question has to do with the left front/right rear pieces. Both have the large hole area center top for wiring to reach sensors. One has closed ends, the other open ends. Which goes in which position, or should both be open or both be closed ended?
ignition shielding left front and or right rear (1).jpgignition shielding left front and or right rear (2).jpgignition shielding left front and or right rear (3).jpg

And one last question: do these look like the correct screws that hold the earlier box together on the right side?
Ignition shielding lid (2).jpgIgnition shielding lid (3).jpg

Thanks for your help. Terry M--is your car early enough to help with this?

The closed-end shield, GM #3934833, with the temp sender wire orifice is for the left side forward position. It was used for 1968-E1970. The open-end shield, GM #3980192, is for the right rear position of 1970+.

Re: 1970 lower ignition shielding questions

Sorry Mike. I have been out of commission for a few days. My 1970 is a January 29 build, so yes it is early enough. The ignition shields have been off, however. All I can recall is the left front and right rear were a booger to get back in. Gary B. Can help you with access to my 1970, as well as most of the rest of the fleet.
      Terry

I'll post several pictures. First is the Left front, with brake lines, steering box and alternator in the way, hard to get a good picture.

These are right side. A little more open.
View of front and rear. Then a view of the right front.

Re: 1970 lower ignition shielding questions

The Right rear would have an open end at the back so the tail of the vertical would fit inside the horizontal shield.

I hope this helps you Mike.

                Thanks for the effort Gary

Thanks, guys! Any thoughts about the rolled lower lip on the one?

My thought is one would have to judge that by braille when the shield is installed on the car. IMO: not worth the time or effort.
