    1972 LT1 research

20180301_163727.jpg20180301_163724.jpg20171025_161303.jpgFirst let me acknowledge the benefit of this site. The members input have been most helpful with my questions regarding my 1972 LT1 Convertible W/ AC renovation project.

In the process of the renovation we identified these chalk markings. I have been informed that these markings are related to production numbers during the original assembly. Do any of you members know if this correct? (I've also posted the engine stamping for production number purposes)

As always any input is greatly appreciated

        Re: 1972 LT1 research

I'm assuming (big word) that the engine orange was touched up at some point, and the stamp pad got painted. As I suspected, its a late 72.

Yes, the markings you see are related to assembly.
I suspect 461 was the job number in the rotation, and AC is self-explanatory.
Look in the left front wheel well at the front of the fender and see if there is a number there. Also peek behind the heat shields/splash guards on the firewall for other markings.

          Re: 1972 LT1 research

Hi Patrick, thanks again for your input. Is 461 representing sequence job numbers by month. I believe the build date for this car is July 19,1972 (which I have been told was near the end of the 72 production)

Correct the engine stamping # appears to have been over sprayed at some time. The engine stamping # matches the cars VIN #. and appeared to not have been modified / rebuilt previously. I'll check the other location as suggested.

Sounds like you've got a nice LT1 there 72, convertible with A/C! Typically those markings you've posted are grease pencil marks rather than chalk. And where is the 461 located? Hard to tell from the photos.

Hi Tom, the markings are in the storage area behind the seats (one of the photo should show the courtesy light at the that area). I'm nearing the renovation, and I'll post photos when I'm done. I attached a couple of progressLT! new paint 2.jpgResized_20190710_171445.jpgLT1 chassis.jpg photos.

Depending on the year, job numbers typically went to 500 then started back over. It was just a way to track a job until a VIN was attached, and doesn't mean much else. They could get interchanged along the way as they moved through production.

It did not correlate to the month.

That's the area behind the storage trays / compartments (obviously under the carpet area). You should be able to reference the battery well.

Yes those are parts/bolts/screws/brackets etc. Primarily C1, C2 and C3 stuff. One of my long time friend who refurbish Corvette's for 35 + years, recently passed away (and those were his). He specialized20200311_152821.jpg20200311_160143.jpgChevy engine stuff.jpg in overhauling Rochester Fuel Injection (small & big box). A few photos of the stuff.

Absolutely I would appreciate any comments you can provide on the chassis. I am trying to achieve a quality restoration, understanding it isn't a virgin survivor. However it is matching numbers including the original 2 page build sheets under the spare tire housing (engine, carburetor, transmission & differential) and approximately 90% of the assembly components appear to be original. Unfortunately a previous owner repainted it to Sunflower Yellow. We did a body off repaint to the original Ontario Orange. Is the Judging Guide the same scoring sheets? My goal is to have the car judged eventually.

As I stated previously your (other members) input is genuinely appreciated. Fred H.

No, the judging guide is 200x the level of anything on the scoring sheets. 300+ pages instead of 16.
I couldn't imagine doing a restoration like this without it.
