In the never ending quest to return my April 29, 1966 roadster to original I'm looking at the shocks. Currently have the Delco gas charged service shocks in it (painted the correct gray). Found a set of originals (correct Pliacell p/ns) with Julian dates making them produced September 1965. I think this may be too early for my April car. Don't want to buy them if they would get a judging deduct. Any judges out there have an opinion on this?

Re: 1966 shocks
The six months includes the 'wiggle room'.
If the date exceeds six months, there should be a 20% deduct for Date.
This assumes the Chassis judges can see the date on the shocks.
At Regionals and National they work the hardest to see those dates.
Judges should be rigorous for the awards to have meaning.
You need shocks dated 302 65 or higher. (Julian calendar on Pg 211 of new 66 JG)- Top

Re: 1966 shocks
Edward,
be mindful of the theory of cost per point. Front Shocks/Bushings are worth a maximum of 5 Originality points. If we split the possible points between those two items, say Shocks 3 (or 4) and Bushings 2 (or 1), your 20% of the value for Date on the shocks is less than 1 point. Same for rears. So if the Pliacels you found are all correct except for Date, They should receive no deduction or a maximum 1 point for fronts, and 1 for rears. How much money are those 2 points maximum worth to you?- Top

Re: 1966 shocks
Don, it isn't a matter of maximizing points or cost per point with me. I've had this car for 40 years and its never been judged and may never be. Its really just a matter of me wanting to return all the things I and the previous owner changed thru the years. Shocks are one of the things I keep an eye out for, no hurry, but I want it to be right. There are other things, like calipers with the wrong casting numbers I will get to at some point; 35 years ago when I exchanged the originals for SS sleeved I wasn't smart enough to get 1st generation castings, we didn't think about such details back then.- Top

Re: 1966 shocks
Ed
your first post of this thread asked for judges opinions re. application of six month date range referencing shock absorbers. If your question is not about judging, but rather concerns what date your original shocks would have had, my answer would be within one to two months of your build date.- Top
