Re: 66 Corvette Tachometer with a low RPM "flutter">need help
[QUOTE=Larry Evoskis (16324);873132]It's nothing subtle like that. The only way to remove the cable from the housing is to detach it from the tach. Once the bare cable is out, I cleaned it off and rubbed the dry lube all over it and then re-inserted it in the housing. It's probably easier to do this if the housing is also detached from the distributor. I believe the back of the tach is more accessible than the back of the speedo, but unless you are very nimble, you will have to take the seat out to crawl under the dash cluster on your back.- Top

Re: 66 Corvette Tachometer with a low RPM "flutter">need help
The distributor main shaft drives the tach cross gear. When the cross gear wears the tach needle will bounce. Eventually the tach will stop working. Disconnect the tach cable housing at the distributor. Remove the bronze coupler in the distributor housing. The the cross gear will likely come out with it. Examine the cross gear It's a helical gear that should not be narrower in the middle of the helix. Wear in the gear is a common problem. Hope that the drive helix which is integral to the main shaft is not damaged.- Top

Dan>So as I understand your comment you are saying it is not a cable problem it's a cross gear problem. In the search I had some sayThe distributor main shaft drives the tach cross gear. the problem was solved with a new cable. Like I said I will try the easier stuff first. BTW>Is the cross gear still available?? Thanks>LarryLarry

Parts are readily available. Cross gear wear is a common problem. I'm not saying it isn't the cable but while your there removing the cable turn the bronze coupler out and check the gear. If it's bad you should be able to see it. It may be a dry cable binding. But as it is I don't think you know for sure what the cause of the problem is. Usually I would only suggest one change at a time to know for sure what the culprit was.- Top
