for a 67 L79 with TI I am trying to track down a igntion miss. My question is will the TI pole piece and magnetic pick up coil cause a miss or is that a part that either works or doesnt?

Re: TI igntion and tracking down a miss
Keith,
I've heard cracked magnets could be a problem but I've not seen that issue before.
A pickup coil could be a issue if the a lead wire intermittently opens. They pass through the bottom of the distributor and up into the coil on the rotating plate. There are a few static tests you could do with a ohmmeter.
Disconnect to 2 terminal plug at the harness. Using alligator clips or a very solid method, connect the ohmmeter to the 2 distributor-end terminals.
You should read 500-700 ohms.
With the meter connected, wiggle the distributor lead wires around and verify the meter reading stays relatively constant within the above range.
Then remove the dist cap and do the same wire wiggle test where the wires enter while moving the rotating plate, either by hand or by using a MityVac connected to the VAC.
One other check is to ensure the 8 tips of the rotating pole piece are not hitting the stator tips. They should be separated by about the thickness of a business card. The screws which hold the magnet can be adjusted to correct this if needed.

Re: TI igntion and tracking down a miss
Well the last time I drove my dads car it had the miss. Told him about it and he went over the wires and did the easy stuff to solve it. My dad didn't have time to test it out. So today I did and it must have been a loose spark plug wire as the miss was gone and the car ran great. But the valve stem seals are going out as it has a lot of blue smoke on start up and with that it fouls the plugs for a little which made the miss that much worse. So its time for new seals.- Top
