Color?

i need to know the color of the hood hinges and the hood latch (female) on the firewall. On page 166 of the 6th addition of the CTIM, there is a picture having the hinges black. On page 167, it shows the hinges unpainted. i did not fine any information on the hood latch on the firewall. Any information would appreciated.

Mel: You need to select based on the body source for your C2. "A" body numbers came from Ionia, MI. Commonly called A O Smith bodies*.
Look on your trim plate. If your body is from 1964-1967, and the body number starts with "A", then you have an A O Smith body.

A O Smith did not install the female hood latch until after the "blackout" underhood paint went on. Therefore the plating on that part should not show any black overspray. If your body was made in St. Louis ("S"), then look for significant black paint on the latches.

If your car is not a "C2" model, please ignore what I said.

tom, i know what the style numbers are. 64 for 1964. 837 for coupe. trim is standard trim. 923aa is paint color, red. body 2693? is this the 2693rd body built? and can you tell me what the d6 in the upper left stands for. thanks mike.

1963 was not a year for A O Smith bodies, so no "S" was needed (St. Louis made them all).
1964 was a year for A O Smith bodies, but there was a time period (in '64) when no prefix meant St. Louis. (Early '64s, read on.)

NCRS tells when the "S" was started; My 63-64 judging manual says: With 1964 Corvette number 109678, A O Smith Corporation in Ionia Michigan began production of Corvette Bodies (shipped by rail to St. Louis). According to a KC zone service bulletin mentioned in this NCRS guide, a prefix was added to the body number after the first "A" bodies came to St. Louis for attachment to their chassis. In summary, the "A" started with #9678, and "S" started when the zone service bulletin was put into practice.

Michael - The D6 is a date code for your body. In 1964 (but not in '63) the "6" is a DAY in month "D". "A" is NOT January. Not 100% sure about 1964, but typically month "A" would be August (when the first 1964 Corvettes were made). You can figure out what month the "D" represents, by counting forward from the first month. In addition to the NCRS manuals, there are places on the 'net where you can see what VINs were made in what month. . .

tom, thank you. that would make the body build date the 6th of november. that works for me as other items are dated around this time. heads november 12th. block november 26th. engine build november 29th.

tom i am being told in another thread on here, color, that the d6 stands for december 6th. that is the build date i got from ncrs. did a stand for september?
