    Bolt Identification

    Good Evening Guys,

Did this bolt manufacturer ever supply bolts for the C2 Corvette assembly line? Specifically 1965 or 1966 build years? I found it on an old part for my car. The head mark appears to read:

    n 8.8

    Thanks for any information. Mike

This is a metric bolt. Certainly not used for any C2 Corvette.

        Owen and Joe,

Thanks for responding. I wasn't sure so I figured I'd ask. This bolt looks well aged and it threw me a bit. Thought it was a bolt logo and not a bolt size. I don't have my hands on the part yet, but it's for my car. A very hard to find part too. Now I suspect this bolt may be jammed in place and may have done damage to the threads?

I'll find out. Thanks for the help. Mike

It's not a bolt size. 8.8 is the material grade of the metric bolt. It doesn't tell you anything about bolt size or thread pitch. 8.8 is ROUGHLY equivalent to SAE grade 5 (GM-280M).

Yes, it looks old but just because it couldn't have been used on a C2 Corvette does not mean it could not have been used on an old car. Auto manufacturers in the rest of the world have been using metric fasteners almost forever. So, it could well have come off some old foreign car.

            Hi Joe,

As always, great information. When I saw this part with the bolt installed I just assumed it may just have been as original as the bracket itself. And that it was a standard thread bolt. I never would've suspected someone would've installed a metric bolt there. I confess that I know very little about metric bolts outside of my socket set sizes I have to work on my wife's imports.

It's interesting that this metric bolt is roughly equivalent to grade 5 strength since that's what's normally found there on known original cars. Thank you for explaining these facts Joe.
