I am in the process of restoring an original 40083 fuel pump. Have a question regarding the original vs a repro diaphragm from a rebuild kit. There are some subtle differences in the design and in at least one dimension. Plz see the pics. Original is on the left - notice that the rubber is not flat, there is a mushroom shape to it while the repro is very flat. There is a subtle difference in the rod lengths too. The original is 1 15/16 inches, base to top, the repro is 1 7/8 inches, (1/16 inch shorter). Also, the rubber of the original is flexible but on the firm side, while the repro is very flexible. The repro kit is from LIC
Questions. Will the difference in the shape of the diaphragm and the slightly shorter rod length of the repro make a difference? Do readers have any recent experience with LIC 40083 rebuild kits? Any problems or issues?
I am entertaining whether I should use the original diaphragm - it appears to be in very good condition, no cracks or stress marks, but I would suspect that it might not tolerate 10% ethanol fuel which I have to use occasionally.
Bottom line - go with the repro or stay with the original.
