Radial tire to fit 63 spare tub

I will be running 205/75R15 radials on my 1963 SWC. Previous posts have identified 195/75R15, 195/65R15 and 185/60R15 as the size of radial tires that will fit the tub for the spare. My thought is to purchase an off brand 195/75R15 for the spare. Just want to confirm this size will fit the tub, before I make the purchase. Please share your thoughts. Thank you.

Re: Radial tire to fit 63 spare tub

I have 205/75R15 radials in both my 63 tubs. They fit fine. They are a bit fatter, so I bought the most inexpensive and longest forward lid bolts. There still is a gap but the diameter is not a problem.

Why not remove the tub buy taking out the eight bolts. Take the tub to the tire store with you.

Thanks for the suggestion, Harry. I took a quick look at tires. I cannot find any 195/75R15. They make 14 and 16 inch, but no 15s. I am able to find 195/65/15.

I use a T155/90R16 spare tire from a 1998 Chevrolet S10 2WD pickup which uses P205/75R15 tires. The wheel is 16" X 4". The O.D. is about the same as the P205/75R15. The tire has never been installed but it is 22 years old which is really old for a tire. My 2011 Chrysler 200 also uses a T155/90R16 spare tire but the lug pattern is different on the Chrysler wheel. One could use a wheel adapter from the Chrysler bolt pattern to the old Chevrolet bolt pattern.

I run an S-10 spare in my 63 and it is the same one I carried in my '61, they allow the tub to completely close and mine has never been on the ground either but i have no illusions about it. Its old and a "limp to a gas station" last ditch failsafe...

Instead of a spare tire, during road trips I use the tub to carry a plug repair kit, small compressor, tool kit, blanket, towels and spare parts wrapped in plastic.

Ray- I carry a 205 radial in my 63 but deflate it to about 5-10 psi (fits up easier) and 2 cans of "fix a flat" aerosol to fill it if need be.

Thanks for the suggestion, Joseph. I have an old 205. Will give it a try.
