Question For Joe Lucia; Throttle Sping Tension

I have found my reproduction spring from Paragon has too light of tension to pull back my throttle on my 66
base engine (manual transmission). I had to add a second spring(different) to make it work correct. I researched
this board and found the following:

    • Hey fellas, just wondering about the correct throttle spring tension for a 65 300 hp 327 ( manual ). I have a new spring in place from LI supply attached to the correct spring perch. But the pedal tension is too weak, so much so that I added another ( incorrect ) spring just to have it stronger so I could drive it. Is it typical for the pedal tension to be rather light for this engine ?

      Re: throttle spring tension

I have seen this sometimes with the repro. springs. another problem is sometimes the throttle blade shaft will wear and cause the shaft to bind and not return to idle.

Ha, well you nailed it Edward. The tension is too light AND sometimes it won't come back to idle without tapping the throttle. I've been looking for a 3721 for 6 months now. I guess I'll just run 2 springs until I can find a carb to replace the incorrect AFB that is on the

Question for Joe or anybody else that can help.

Do you know of a single GM spring that will work for me? Possible Part Number?? Thanks>Larry

Re: Question For Joe Lucia; Throttle Sping Tension

It's not the spring causing your problem IMHO. I'll share my personal experience with the same issue. When I bought my '67 L79 it had a replacement List 3810 carb on it. It, also, had two throttle return springs on it, which I knew were incorrect. So, I removed one of them and the carb would not return to a normal idle position with just the single spring. OK, weak spring. Ordered a new, correct spring from LIC and installed...still won't return to normal idle. removed the carb and had it rebuilt (needed it anyway), re-installed rebuilt carb with the new return spring...same issue. Lived with it for awhile and decided to buy a new Holley 4610 List 3810. Installed new carb with new return spring...everything works perfectly.
That old carb was simply worn in so many areas that it was binding and not allowing all the pieces to return to where they should be at idle. I'm not saying that a more professional rebuild may have solved the issues, but I love new carburetors.

[QUOTE=Leif Anderson (29632). Ordered a new, correct spring from LIC and installed...still won't return to normal idle.

Leif: Believe that is where you went wrong(IMHO).IT IS NOT THE "CORRECT" SPRING; EITHER FROM LIC OR PARAGON.
How do I know? I switched my friends base engine(like mine)throttle return spring to my unit>Worked perfect. Back to my
original question>Where can I find the correct one? I'm sure GM has that for different applications but how to find it is another question. Anybody?
      Thanks>Larry

I'll prob scandalize some but I had the same issue on an AFB, I took the repro spring off and unwound one of the coils and "recreated" the hooked end resulting in the shortened spring being strong enough to return the carb to idle and ran with it for a couple of years before replacing the car with a correct WCFB for my base engine 63.

Might want to try Dr Rebuild for correctly operating spring

i had the same throttle return problem with a 3247 off a 66 425 hp. you know those tiny white teflon or some kinda plastic bushings that come with a holley master rebuild kit. remove the throttle plates, then the throttle shaft, then use the new bushings. worked for me. mike

My experience has been that the reproduction accelerator return springs often "don't cut it"---either too weak or too strong. The exception are those available from Dr. Rebuild. I've had good experience with those. However, it appears that rascal is hiding out right now.

The original spring, GM #3830222, was discontinued without supersession in July, 1981. 39 years is a long time for any NOS stock to dry up.
