Grease recommendation for the tach drive assembly

Guys,

I'm installing my tach cable on my 69 350/350 and wondering what gear lube to use on the assembly. I've searched the forum and found several recs, from axle grease, white lithium grease, and engine assy lube. Is there a consensus on what is best to use?

If you are talking about what to use on the cable itself " cable ease " is what you would want to use . I would only apply it to the distributor end sparingly so and you should be good to go. Hope this helps Jeff

Dorman makes a speedometer cable lube. I got it from Summit Racing but O'Reilly's and other places carry it too.

The original lubricant, Delco Remy Distributor Shaft Lubricant 1960954 is now obsolete. Any chassis grease will work fine. I use the red wheel bearing grease.

I just reattached mine last week. Like Tom, used red wheel bearing grease. Didn't pack it full, gumdrop sized blob pushed into the back of the housing.

Disc brake wheel bearing grease. Any brand will do. Same grease is great for the '57-'65 Fuel injections drive cables.

Do you have to lube the tach drive gear periodically as a regular maintenance item? It doesn't pull up lube from shaft on its own??

There is no "interface" between the tach cross gear cavity and the lubricant in the cable. So, one will not lubricate the other. The lubricant in the cross gear cavity will last a very long time so I would not call it a regular maintenance item. However, when a distributor is removed for repair or rebuild, the old lubricant should be cleaned out and replaced.

Yes, the GM #1960954 was discontinued without supersession. However, GM #1051344, which is still available, will work just fine. This is a high temperature wheel bearing grease which will work for many applications. There are also many equivalent products on the market. Some will specify "meets GM 1051344" or some such.
