Correct carpet binding on a 69

    Guys,

I've read in the judging manual that for 69 the front carpet is bound along its posterior border. I order my saddle carpet for my 69 coupe a few years ago from Al Knoch and only now getting around to installing it and the posterior border of the front carpet sections are not bound. I realize none of the aftermarket carpets are even close to perfect but I would have thought that at least a detail such as this would have been correct. Am I missing something? Is this corrected in newer versions?

Ok, I'll ask. Newer version of carpet? Or, newer version of Judging manual?

The 4th Edition talked about the floor carpet. It said: Behind the seats, the bulkhead carpet is unfinished where it ends at the floor, and the floor carpet with stitched vinyl piping extends over it.

The 5th Edition, we added more pictures, talked about the direction of the weave between front and rear carpet, and duplicated the above sentence.

Al Knoch for years molded the carpet with the weave front to rear on all the pieces, in order to get maximum usage out of a roll of carpet (width). For the longest time, he would not do it any other way. I understand he will today, but you need to ask and willing to pay extra.

As we judge, we learn more. As we judge and find mistakes, I mark up my judging manual so I know what needs to be done in future additions, future revisions. As we do updates, I'll make those corrections, fix errors, add what we missed last time. The manuals still have things we don't judge and don't describe.

Talk with Al Knoch, I'm sure he'll make more carpet for you.

Spoke to folks at Al Knoch. They're going to send me a swatch of carpet to see how closely it matches the stuff I have. If it does I might have them re-make the fronts and bulkhead carpet with the correct binding. I've installed the rear carpet already and I'm not about to do that over again, with placing all those footman loops. that was a PITA.

Gary, based on the current judging criteria you mentioned, which carpet would need to be made differently from his usual manufacturing practice, the rear or the fronts/bulkhead? As I mentioned I'm stuck with the rear after the struggle it was to install. Hoping the corrections are in the other pieces.

Worst comes to worst, they said they would be happy to add/delete binding where needed on the carpet I already have so that is my fallback position.

Not knowing what they shipped you, It's difficult to answer your question.
The bulkhead carpet weave should run front to rear and should be unbound and extend onto the front floor a few inched. The front floor carpet weave runs side to side and is bound at the rear where it meets the bulkhead. The bulkhead carpet lays underneath the floor carpet.

You'll have to look at the carpet and see what different.

The footman loops are the chrome loops that are mounted to the side and floor of the rear compartment on C3s. The hold the clips for the t-top straps that secure the T-tops. See pic

Thanks for that. I was afraid I was missing something, but the car I'm working on is a convertible and fortunately I don't have to fuss with these. Apparently they are a real bugger to do...
