Looking at a set of brake drums for sale stated to be off a metallic brake car for 59 to 64 corvette or chevy. I've learned on this forum that for 63/64 they should have an "X" on the steel plate on the front two. These have an"F" (see pics). Can anyone identify them?

Where have you learned about the "X"? My memory only comes up with a queasy memory that such drums were supposed to be ground to a "finer" degree - but that can be a faulty memory, I find. It would seem more likely to me to be an inspector's stamp. -

As an aside, I was also looking for the meaning of an 'F' marking on a brake drum.
These photos come from the 1961 assembly line body drop... the 'F' is PAINTED on the rear drum.

The casting numbers are 3828671 and 3828688. I think these are correct for 64 but likely other years. Interestingly, there is a set of NOS 3758538 Drums on ebay for $400 and one has the F. It may be that the F was once used to indicate Front. I think the 3758538 part number goes back to 1959 and possibly the casting number above go back to 1959 also. I've asked for the casting numbers on the 8538'sComment

Print # 3843660 (2-5-63) "Rear wheel spindle support arm & Brake assembly Chart" shows some Corvette REAR drum part numbers were changed:
3-22-63 (A) Stock organic 11.00 x 2.00 Both changed to: 3828686 LH 3828686 RH
12-13-63 (B) Metallic 11.00 x 2.00 LH only became: 3858847 LH 3828687 RH remained the same
12-13-63 (C) Metallic w fan 11.20 x 2.00 LH only changed to: 3858848 LH 3841831 RH remained the same
These are PART NUMBERS not CASTING numbers therefore may not change anything. Front Chart might be somewhere. As you are probably aware the J-65 option was available on several series of pass. cars as well. I suspect the stamped letter identifies what type brake system is inside the drum and perhaps what series to install it on. You guys are more up to speed on this option perhaps this info might help a little.Comment

Actually a different seller of 3758538 got back to me. They have 4 drums and only one has a casting number. It is 3754166. All four have W5 or W7 on them. What is the W designation...a mold or cavity number and is it common for the casting number to be missing? These drums are configured physically (casting contour and hole stampings in the plate) just like the ones on my 64. I'm asking as I'm considering buying two as a backup to my originals and want to know what they are if possible.Comment
