    54 Starter Motor & Solenoid

I believe that this may be the original starter, but need some help deciphering the date code on the tag. The car is an early 54 (VIN ending 2040). The date codes on every component of the car I have checked are January through April of 54.

Here is a photo of the rather banged up tag on the starter housing. It sure looks like the part number is 1107109. That matches the TIM&JG information. The date code looks like D24. However, it almost looks like there is a digit to the left of the D in D24. Can someone tell me the expected format of the date code on these? If D is the month, then April would match pretty well. If 4 is 54 that makes sense to me as well. Anyway, what is the format for this date code? Or does it vary? I am going to try to clean up the area just to the left of the D some more as well.

Maybe I have answered my own question. I actually READ the TIM&JG section on the starter more carfully. It references date coding similar to distributor and generator. So, it would seem that there would be four characters here. _D24. _ is the year, D is April, and 24 is the 24th. So now I need to clean up the gouge right where the _ is and see if it is a "4", for 1954. All of you experts out there, let me know if you think I am on the right track.

    Thanks.

You're exactly correct. Delco-Remy used this date coding protocol for years-----first digit=last digit of year, following alpha character= month (A= January) and last 2 digits=day of the month.

Okay. Thanks! So I am hoping for a "4" under the gouge. I will clean carefully tonight in that area and see what I find.

In the end I could not positively discern a stamped digit under the gouge. Who do gouges appear in the most unhelpful places?? However, I believe I have what I need for now. Thanks!
